Polish Film Awards ‘Orły’ for the movie ‘Chopin, Chopin!’

The Polish Film Awards ‘Orły’ – the most important awards of the film community in Poland – were presented on Monday, March 9th. At the 28th edition of the ‘Orły,’ the movie ‘Chopin, Chopin!’ received four statuettes: for set design (for Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński), costume design (for Magdalena Biedrzycka and Justyna Stolarz), make-up (for Dariusz Krysiak), and sound design (for Marcin Matlak, Marcin Kasiński, and Filip Krzemień).

Directed by Michał Kwieciński, with a screenplay by Bartosz Janiszewski and starring Eryk Kulm in the title role, the film premiered at the 50th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in 2025. It was presented in Warsaw just before the 19th Chopin Competition – the screening was one of the events accompanying the Competition. Chopin’s compositions and improvisations on period instruments were performed for the film by Tomasz Ritter, winner of the 1st Chopin Competition on Period Instruments, and Kamil Borkowski.

Chopin for the participants of the Warsaw Uprising

There is much evidence in Fryderyk Chopin's biography of his deep attachment to his homeland. Writing to his family from Vienna at the age of 21, he makes this clear declaration: ‘Malfatti [i.e. the imperial court physician Johann Malfatti, who introduced the young composer to the circles of the artistic elite of Vienna] attempts in vain to convince me that every artist is a cosmopolitan. Even if that were the case, as an artist I am still in the cradle, but as a Pole I have begun my third decade.’
