Garrick Ohlsson
Winner of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 1970, acclaimed for his interpretative and technical mastery. Though recognized as one of the leading exponents of Chopin’s music, he commands an enormous repertoire, which ranges over the entire piano literature, including over 80 concertos, from Haydn and Mozart to works of the twenty-first century. As a chamber musician, Ohlsson has collaborated with the Cleveland, Emerson, Tokyo and Takacs quartets. He has also performed with legendary artists such as Magda Olivero, Jessye Norman and Ewa Podleś. He has recorded extensively for labels including Arabesque, RCA Red Seal, Angel, BMG, Delos, Hanssler, Nonesuch, Telarc, Hyperion and Virgin Classics. His discography includes works by Chopin, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Brahms, Granados, Tomlinson Griffes, Scriabin, Smetana, Debussy, Bartok, Dvořak, Prokofiev and Liszt. His ten-disc set of the complete Beethoven Sonatas garnered critical acclaim, including a Grammy. He has also recorded the complete works of Chopin (2008). In 2010 he was the subject of The Art of Chopin, a documentary produced to mark the Chopin Year celebrations. Born in White Plains (New York), he began piano studies aged eight at the Westchester Conservatory of Music; at 13 he entered the Juilliard School, in New York City. He was shaped by many distinguished teachers, including Claudio Arrau, Olga Barabini, Tom Lishman, Sascha Gorodnitzki, Rosina Lhevinne and Irma Wolpe. Although he won first prize at the Busoni Competition in Italy (1966) and the Montreal Piano Competition (1968), it was his triumph in Warsaw that brought him worldwide recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. Among his many honours are the Avery Fisher Prize, the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize and Poland’s ‘Gloria Artis’ Gold Medal for services to culture. He is a Steinway Artist and makes his home in San Francisco.
