Michel Beroff was born in France in 1950. After graduating from the Paris Conservatoire in 1966, the following year he won first prize in the 1st Olivier Messiaen International Piano Competition, and he has since been considered one of the most outstanding interpreters of Messiaen’s music. He has performed with the most prestigious orchestras around the world, under the direction of such conductors as Abbado, Barenboim, Bernstein and Boulez. As a chamber music partner, he has been very active playing with Martha Argerich, Barbara Hendricks, Jean-Philippe Collard, Augustin Dumay, Pierre Amoyal and Lynn Harrell. As a conductor, he has led the chamber orchestra of La Scala, Russian State Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, Cannes Chamber Orchestra, Berkeley Symphony and Montreal Youth Orchestra. Professor Emeritus of the Paris Conservatoire, where he taught for 25 years, he gives regular masterclasses in many countries, including Japan, China, the US, the UK, Italy, Germany and France. An exclusive EMI artist for over 25 years, Beroff has recorded more than 50 discs, including the complete works for piano and orchestra by Liszt, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, conducted by Seiji Ozawa and Kurt Masur. For Deutsche Grammophon, he has recorded Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand with the LSO and Claudio Abbado. His latest recordings include the complete piano music of Debussy. Beroff has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque on five occasions. As a publisher, he has worked for Wiener Urtext on a new edition of Debussy’s piano music. In 2006, for the Japanese network NHK, he gave a series of 15 masterclasses on French music. He has served as a jury member of many important piano competitions, including the Tchaikovsky, Cliburn, Leeds, Clara Haskil, Rubinstein and Long/Thibaud. Many of his students have won top prizes in international competitions.
